Flame Retardant Treatments – Technical Specification

Product Description

Fabric Backing & Finishing provides professional flame retardant treatments using Fire-Poof™, a water-based, non-hazardous flame retardant designed for use on textiles, wood substrates, and select decorative materials. Fire-Poof™ is applied by certified applicators and formulated to reduce flame spread and ignition while maintaining the integrity of the treated material.

Applicable Materials

Textiles: Cotton, linen, silk, wool, rayon, polyester, decorative textiles and wall fabrics.

Wood Substrates: Raw, unfinished wood panels and components.

Fire-Poof™ is not effective on 100% nylon, acetate, acrylic, plastic, metal, or surfaces with existing coatings, sealants, stains, or water repellents.

Fire Code Support (Commonly Referenced Standards)

Fabric & Decorative Materials:

  • NFPA 701
  • CA Title 19 (1237.1)
  • NYC COA #5687
  • CAN/ULC-S109-03 (Small & Large Scale)
  • FAA 25.853
  • NFPA 260
  • ASTM E84 (Adhered Applications)
  • CA TB 117
  • UFAC
  • BFD 1X-1

  • ASTM E84 – Class A / Class 1
  • NFPA 255
  • UL 723
  • UBC 42-1
  • CA Title 19 (1236.4)

Final code compliance is determined by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Independent laboratory testing can be arranged when required.

Application & Performance Notes

  • Water-based, ready-to-use formulation
  • Typical fabric coverage: 200–800 sq ft per gallon depending on fiber content and density
  • Raw wood coverage: 150 sq ft/gal for Class A/Class 1; 250 sq ft/gal for Class B/Class 2
  • Cure time up to 24 hours depending on material
  • Some textiles may require treatment on both sides
  • Treated fabrics should be dry cleaned only; washing removes flame retardancy
  • Re-treatment required after cleaning to maintain compliance

Safety & Environmental Considerations

  • Water-based, non-toxic formulation
  • No odor when applied
  • pH neutral (6.5–7.0)
  • Shelf life up to 5 years unopened
  • Application by trained, certified personnel required for certain jurisdictions

Certification & Documentation

  • Certificate of Application provided with all flame retardant treatments
  • Certificate of Flame Retardancy available with independent lab testing when required
  • Certification requirements must be identified prior to processing

Disclaimer

Flame retardant treatments reduce flame spread but do not render materials non-combustible. Performance may vary based on material composition, construction, coatings, and service conditions. Periodic inspection and testing are recommended to maintain compliance.
